RE:          Announcing the Roll-Out of Career Tracks for Policy-Covered (Non-Represented) Staff

After several years of preparation, on-going consultation, and tremendous work by many employees across the campus and within Human Resources, we are pleased to announce that UCSB is in the final stages of implementing Career Tracks, the new classification framework for policy-covered staff at the University of California.  During this time, Human Resources has worked closely with over 160 supervisors, managers, business officers, directors, assistant/associate vice chancellors, and divisional control points to ensure a smooth transition to the new Career Tracks framework.  During the month of April, Human Resources will offer multiple workshops and webinars, open to all policy-covered staff, to explain the new classification framework and answer questions.  Transition to Career Tracks will begin May 1, 2018.

Many of our policy-covered staff are already familiar with the Career Tracks framework because of the work that has been happening behind the scenes for more than three years; however, we realize that for many other policy-covered staff, this will be their first opportunity to learn about Career Tracks.

We understand that giving up our 40+ year old classification framework for something completely new may feel unsettling.  Some will be skeptical of whether “new” equates to “better.”  We want to assure you that transitioning to Career Tracks will bring many benefits that do not exist in today’s classification framework.  We are excited to be in the final stages of implementation and look forward to sharing more information about

Career Tracks in the coming weeks!

See below for additional information about Career Tracks and upcoming workshops and webinars.

What is Career Tracks?

Career Tracks is a new framework and job architecture that aligns jobs to respective labor markets by occupation.  Career Tracks enables UC to define job titles consistently within each location and across the university. Levels for professional (individual contributor), supervisory and management roles are defined consistently across occupations for comparable jobs. Career Tracks makes it easier for employees to identify and develop career paths and contains well defined job standards that will replace the outdated Series Concepts and Classification Specifications for policy-covered jobs. What positions are included in Career Tracks?

Policy-covered staff will transition to the new Career Tracks framework.  SMG, Academics, student employees, and represented staff are not included.

Have other UC locations already implemented Career Tracks?

Yes, other UC locations have already implemented Career Tracks, including UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC San Francisco, UC Santa Cruz, Office of the President, and Agricultural and Natural Resources.  UC Los Angeles and UC Irvine are in progress.  Implementation of Career Tracks at all UC locations is a high priority for UC President Janet Napolitano.

What are the benefits of transition to the new Career Tracks framework?

Some of the benefits are immediate, and others will create long term improvements for career paths and professional development of our policy-covered staff.  In addition, the transition to Career Tracks across the UC system has resulted in a recent review of all policy-covered jobs at each location to improve consistency in classifications across all jobs and all levels.  Many more benefits will be covered during the workshops, so be sure to register and attend one of the sessions!  In the meantime, learn more about Career Tracks on the HR website at: https://www.hr.ucsb.edu/hr-units/compensation/career-tracks
