RE:  Minimum Wage for California will increase from $8.00/hour to $9.00/hour effective July 1, 2014

This is a reminder that Governor Brown signed into law a new state minimum wage of $9.00/hour that will take effect July 1, 2014.  UCOP will provide programming assistance to the campus to automate the EDB update to comply with the minimum wage increase.  The program will identify active appointments with an hourly rate of less than $9/hour, and will create a new distribution with a pay rate of $9/hour beginning June 22nd, 2014 (based on the nearest full biweekly pay period prior to July 1, 2014).  The programming update is anticipated to take place the week of June 23rd.  You will be advised as soon as we receive the exact date of the update to the EDB.

UCSB salary range minimums that fall below $9.00/hour will be adjusted upward to $9.00/hour effective July 1, 2014.  The job families impacted by this change are the Student Assistant and Student Assistant Non UC titles.  By January 1, 2016, the existing student salary structures will collapse to one range that can encompass all categories of student employment.  This proposed change is designed to simplify the administration of student employment under UCPath.

*In preparation for the transition to UCPath, salary ranges for the titles listed above will require a salary range minimum and maximum.  Human Resources has established a recommended salary range maximum of $35/hour for TC 4919 and 4925.  Hourly pay rates for incumbents employed in TC 4919 and 4925 should not exceed $35/hour.  Appointments not conforming with the salary ranges shown above require consultation with Human Resources.

Next Steps:

  1. Identify impacted employees in the above mentioned title codes in your department.  Review the distribution lines in PPS after the EDB update has occurred to ensure that the update was applied correctly.
  2. Ensure that all future hires on or after July 1, 2014 are hired at a pay rate of $9/hour or higher.
  3. Ensure that employees are paid within the salary range minimum and maximum.
  4. Ensure that employees paid on a “by agreement” basis will earn a minimum equivalent of at least $9.00/hour beginning July 1, 2014, or sooner.

Please don’t hesitate to contact the Compensation Analyst assigned to your unit for assistance with questions.
