RE:  Minimum Wage for California will increase from $8.00/hour to $9.00/hour effective July 1, 2014

This is a reminder that Governor Brown signed into law a new state minimum wage of $9.00/hour that will take effect July 1, 2014.  Tied to this, a second minimum wage adjustment is also scheduled to take effect January 1, 2016 that will increase the state minimum to $10/hour.

To comport with the new minimum wage law, UCSB salary range minimums that fall below $9.00/hour will be adjusted upward to $9.00/hour effective July 1, 2014.  The job families impacted by this change are the Student Assistant and Student Assistant Non UC titles.  By January 1, 2016, the existing student salary structures will collapse to one range that can encompass all categories of student employment.  This proposed change is designed to simplify the administration of student employment under UCPath.

Next Steps:

  1. Identify impacted employees in the above mentioned title codes in your department.  Pay rate adjustments for employees currently paid below $9.00/hour will need to be updated in PPS with an effective date of July 1, 2014 or sooner.  (It is recommended that this pay rate change align with the nearest biweekly pay period that begins June 22, 2014.)
  2. Ensure that employees are paid within the salary range minimum and maximum.
  3. Ensure that employees paid on a “by agreement” basis will earn a minimum equivalent of at least $9.00/hour beginning July 1, 2014, or sooner.

Additional instructions concerning the implementation of the pay rate changes will be provided in the next several months.  Please don’t hesitate to contact the Compensation Analyst assigned to your unit for assistance with questions.

Thank you.
