RE:       PPSM Policy 21- Selection and Appointment

I am writing with an update on revised and updated Personnel Policies for Staff Members (PPSM).  The University has completed the employee comment phase and proposed changes to PPSM 21, Selection and Appointment, are now in effect.  The final policy is now available on UCnet at:  http://policy.ucop.edu/doc/4010394/PPSM%2021

The following list of revisions to PPSM 21 Selection and Appointment are highlighted below but are not inclusive of all changes to the policy.

·  Requirement that the background check should be initiated as soon as an offer of employment has been extended to a candidate to be hired into a critical position
·   Requirement that a background check must be completed prior to the start of the appointment of a current employee into a critical position, unless the current employee has successfully completed a background check within the past six months
·   Former employees, including retirees, are subject to a background check when rehired into a critical position, unless the former employee has successfully completed a background check within the past six months
·   Recommendation that a minimum of two individual reference checks be conducted on all candidates recommended for hire, including current UC employees
·   New expanded list of definition of terms
·   Expanded definition for the employment of near relatives

If you have any questions on this policy, please contact Melinda Crawford (Melinda.Crawford@hr.ucsb.edu) in Human Resources.

Thank you.
