Behavioral Health

Behavioral health services include counseling for personal or work-related issues, substance abuse recovery services and medication management. These services are delivered by licensed therapists, including marriage family therapists, social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists.  All services are confidential.

Does my medical insurance cover behavioral health care?

All UC medical plans cover behavioral health care and substance abuse treatment.

Your choice of clinician is related to your medical plan:

  • UC Care, Health Savings Plan and Core - Anthem Blue Cross clinicians and non-Anthem clinicians
  • Health Net Blue & Gold - Optum clinicians only
  • Kaiser - Kaiser and Optum clinicians

How do I access behavioral health care?

Anthem (UC Care, Health Savings Plan and Core members)
When using an Anthem or non-Anthem clinician, you do NOT need a referral from your Primary Care Physician (PCP) or personal physician.  When you or a family member needs behavioral health care you may call Anthem for assistance or contact a clinician directly.  Anthem can help you find a clinician who is accepting new patients or who has a specialization you desire.

Optum (Health Net and Kaiser members)
When using an Optum clinician, you do NOT need a referral from your Primary Care Physician (PCP) or personal physician.  When you or a family member needs behavioral health care you may call Optum for assistance or contact a clinician directly.  Optum can help you find a clinician who is accepting new patients or who has a specialization you desire.

Optum Member Services:  1-888-440-8225
Prior to your first visit, we recommend that you call Optum Member Services to:

  • confirm that a clinician is part of the Optum network and is taking new clients
  • give Optum the name of your non-Optum clinician

Kaiser:  When using the Kaiser plan, contact your Primary Care Physician for a referral.

Kaiser members may also select an Optum clinician, see instructions above.

Academic and Staff Assistance Program (ASAP)
ASAP in UCSB Human Resources can assist you with a personal or professional problem.  Call ASAP for help locating resources most appropriate for your needs or for referrals to network practitioners.  ASAP also provides confidential counseling with a licensed professional counselor.
